I have the D50 and a friend of mine has the D40. The D40 is a nice camera, however, the one reason I would not get the D40 is that is does not have an internal focus motor for the lens. This means that lens' without a built-in motor (such as the 50mm f/1.8 prime that I use to shoot my daughters dance recitals - as I they won't allow a flash) have to be focused manually. For me that is an issue, may not be for you. Just thought I'd point that out.<br /><br />You have a nice family. I adore my D40...got it at ...yay for a new camera! I adore my D40...got it at Chrsitmas time. It fell...lens broke.
