This was Maressa's halloween costume request this year
We went from Hello Kitty, to Wonder Woman, to girl gnome to a pink unicorn.
She saw a doggie unicorn costume at the pet store.
She wouldn't budge after that.
I saw an expensive, but not super impressive one at Potttery Barn kids.
I finally decided to tackle a home made one.
It was really easy actually.
Just a plain sweat suit with hood and felt.
I didn't even need my machine.
She liked it just a little bit.
She kept it on all day once we tried it on.
Her sister and her played princess and unicorn for a while.
So here's how I made it:
The hardest part was finding a plain pink hoodie and sweat pants.
I actually ended up finding this set on Amazon.
Then I cut a bunch of white felt for the mane and tail.
Then black felt for the hooves and bit of pink trim for the feet.
I'm not sure how long the strip of white felt I used.
I cut 2 long and wide strips like above.
Then I sewed them down over the hood, one on top of another, with white embroidery floss.
The mane was too long so I cut it off where I wanted it to stop.
I used those pieces to sew a tail at the bottom hem of the jacket.
I added felt hooves to the hem of the legs and arms of her sweat suit.
I didn't take a picture, but I added the pink scalloped felt over the top of the stitches.
Then I added ears to the top of the hood in pink felts.
I used glitter white felt for the horn.
I simply cut a skinny cone shape.
Then sewed the sides together and added a little stuffing.
Using white embroidery floss I sewed it to the top of the hood.
And a big thank you hug from my own unicorn. :)

you are such a beautiful mommy inside and out!!
Erika, thank you for your sweet comment. :)
cute costume and cute photos!
Thanks for the inspiration, my 5 yr old is insisting on a unicorn costume for World Book Day at school (3 days and counting!) She might just get one now I've seen this. :-)
AWESOME! So cute and so doable! Thanks so much for sharing... My soon to be 5 year old is having a unicorn and rainbow party and is adamant that she be dressed as a unicorn... your sharing of this means that my little one must may have that extra special touch of magic on her special day :)
Thanks so much for posting this! I needed inspiration for my daughter's first Halloween (she's 9 months!), and as a not entirely crafty person, I thought this would be a good way to make her something homemade.
I opted for a lot more glue gun than thread and needle, haha, but in the end, it turned out fabulously! I can't wait for her to wear it at our city's Boo at the Zoo event next weekend!
Perfect! Thank you for the inspiration! This is simple yet just what little girls are looking for in a unicorn costume. I'm going to make this and then add wings, since of course my daughter wants a unicorn pegasus.
Thanks for the tutorial! Due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to sew my daughter's costume on the 28th of October. I'm so happy I found your blog with such complete and simple instructions- it turned out great! Thanks again...
I have been sweating ever since I found out my girl wanted to be a unicorn. This is AMAZING. I am totally copying this. She's going to freak when she sees this!
Thankyouthankyouthankyou.....
I'm a 20-year old guy who works at an elementary school, and a few of my coworkers and I found the "Pink Fluffy Unicorn" video, found it hilarious, and showed it to the kids who of course spent the rest of the day singing the song and drawing pink unicorns, much to the annoyance of some of my more grumpy coworkers. Long story short, I think it would be hilarious for me to show up to work dressed as a pink fluffy unicorn on Halloween, so I'm looking for ideas to make that costume. Your daughter's costume looks neat, I'm definitely going to be copying some of your ideas. Great job ;)
I am wanting to make a unicorn costume for my daughter for Halloween. I found this a few weeks ago and it was my favorite! Now I am ready to make it and can't see the pics!! I don't know why. Any help??
I'm sorry. Since I haven't been keeping up the blog lately, I have let my photobucket expire. I've been reconsidering it since I seem to still have a good bit of traffic due to pinterest. I'll see if I can't get them up in next day or so. Sorry for inconvenience!
